Seguin Island's light station off Maine dates to 1795, while its current tower and quarters date to 1857. Its preservation organization recounts ghost stories and some residents' unusual experiences. Those accounts do not establish the piano legend as a documented murder.

The Lighthouse Dates to 1795

The Friends of Seguin Island Light Station distinguish the first tower from later replacements. Their chronology records the present tower, quarters and Fresnel lens in 1857, automation in 1985 and transfer of the island and buildings to the Friends in 1995.

Separating the station's founding from the surviving structure avoids treating every story as if it happened in the same building.

What Is the Piano Legend?

A 2024 post on the Friends' website recounts the tale of a keeper driven to violence by his wife's repeated piano playing. It is introduced as one of the island's ghost stories, not accompanied by a named victim or contemporary crime record.

The earlier account treated the tragedy as an explanation for later music. The legend does not establish that the tragedy occurred.

What Experiences Have Residents Described?

The same post describes a basement-door incident and a voice that sounded like a greeting. Its writer also considers ordinary explanations, including drafts and a gull's call, rather than concluding that a spirit caused them.

That uncertainty is part of the account. Removing it would make the report more conclusive than the witness intended.

What Do We Know About the Phantom Captain?

The older archive mentioned a shipwrecked captain searching for his crew but supplied no name, vessel or wreck record. Without those details, the story cannot be attached to a documented maritime loss.

Visiting and Interpreting Seguin Island

The island's lighthouse, lens and keeper history provide a substantial subject even when the ghost claims remain unresolved. Use the Friends' current access information for visits; conditions and availability should not be inferred from an old story.
