The former Southwestern Michigan Tuberculosis Sanatorium at 1500 Blakeslee Avenue in Kalamazoo opened in 1954, later became the psychiatric hospital's Northwest Unit and was demolished in 2011. It is not an abandoned hospital that visitors can explore today.
Identifying the Right Institution
The Kalamazoo Public Library's local history documents the four-story tuberculosis facility and its later conversion. This is the institution linked in the earlier account, which incorrectly placed its origins in the early 1900s.
Kalamazoo had several medical institutions. A shared city name or the word sanitarium does not make their buildings, staff and histories interchangeable.
From Treatment Facility to Housing Site
The library records the end of tuberculosis treatment at the facility in 1969 and its subsequent use as a psychiatric hospital unit. That unit closed in 1990. After years of vacancy, the building was demolished in late 2011.
The Kalamazoo County Land Bank describes redevelopment of the former hospital property as Prairie Gardens senior housing. This later use is essential context for any historical photograph or account of the empty building.
